2011 Nguni Classic Doubles Entries
The Nguni Classic Mountain Bike and Trail run event held this past weekend (10th and 11th September 2011) on Blanerne farm, between Ladysmith and Newcastle in KZN, saw the total number of entrants in all the events over the weekend increase from 206 in 2010, the inaugural year, to 411 this year.
Event organizer Angie Mitchell–Innes puts the success down to a number of reasons. “We continued to focus on families by including a kiddies ride, the 5km run and walk and then moved on to challenge fit and accomplished runners and bikers with the 14 km run, 19km ride and then the very challenging 42km bike ride on the Sunday. The addition of the Mountain Splendour ‘Tent City’, 40 tents with proper beds and mattresses, alongside the usual camping sites and together with the permanent ablutions that were built with flushing toilets etc, attracted so many people. Next year we hope to double the size of ‘Tent City’. The other new event was a 8km night ride which was fantastic as we had a full moon.”
The inclusion of a 154m floating bridge across the dam added a spectacular finish to the mountain bike races. Winner of the 42km ride A C Swanepoel from Newcastle said “The ride was challenging and it was hot, but riding through the natural bush and over rivers was for me very special. The organization of the event was excellent and I’ll definitely be back next year.” This same sentiment was expressed by the large contingent from St Dominic’s Academy, Newcastle whose youngest entrant (12 years old) Brett Pedrelli finished the 42km ride in the hot sun but was determined to finish.
Based on the success of the 2010 event, the number of sponsors increased significantly to include Drakensberg Logistics, Mountain Splendour, ABI, Dunlop, SA Can, Wedgewood Nougat, Cyclesphere, Jo Jo Tanks, Sportsmans Warehouse, Afgri, Signrex, Arrow Logistics, Kelrn Vervoer, Wrigleys and AAM. Refreshments and food were provided by Ladysmith Rotary Club, Toastees, The Coffee Coach, and a bar which quenched the thirst of the rugby fans who watched the Bokke vs Wales on a big screen.
If the Nguni Classic continues to grow at this pace it will become one of KZN MTB and trail run events not to be missed! The 2012 event is scheduled for the long weekend on 22nd-24th September 2012.

If you didnt already know....
The Nguni Classic is a brand new exciting MTB / Trail Run event and was run twice before - for the first time in September 2010 and over the weekend of the 10th and 11th September 2011. The 2012 event is scheduled for the long weekend on 21st-24th September 2012. This event’s main focus is for family, fun and friends to be able to enjoy a relaxed yet energetic weekend away in the heart of the KZN battlefields on one of South Africa’s biggest Nguni farms.
There is “something for everyone” whether you are 5 years old or 60 years old male or female.
In order for parents to relax and have fun, we incorporate a supervised kiddies zone. The zone includes a jumping castle, face painting slides and much more…

Rotary International sells food for the duration of the event, so for those of you who dont want the hassle of bringing and cooking your own food, just bring a little extra cash!
As previously mentioned there is “something for everyone”. Athletes are urged to enter a run and an MTB event; at the end of day we are all going for the fun and the experience of enjoying our beautiful country!
Once all the athletes are feeling fresh after a hot shower, the Saturday night starts off with African Sundowners, and ends with a traditional South African braai around the camp fire and then off to bed.
After the night under the stars, tents and torches, Sunday’s events begins. Once the last race has finished prize giving commences, with lots of give aways and lucky draws.
So come and enjoy this experience with us, it will be one you will never forget!!!!!
